Can anyone work in the security industry?
- If you’re interested in a career in the security industry you must:
- Be aged 18 or over; and
- Have a clean criminal record; and
- Be able to communicate clearly in English: and
- Be eligible to work in New Zealand.
Is the security industry just about security guards?
Do I need previous security industry experience?
You don’t need prior experience to enter the security industry. No matter what industry background you have experience in, you will have gained important transferable skills which can be used for a career in the security industry. For example, you may have customer communication skills, problem solving skills, health and safety knowledge or similar.
Does the security industry offer good future prospects?
Do I need a licence to work in the security industry?
Yes, you need a licence to work in the security industry, with the following exceptions:
- You are an unpaid volunteer
- You are an employee of a government agency such as the police or armed forces
- You are an electrical installer with a current licence from the Electrical Workers Registration Board carrying out electrical installation work of security equipment, however you will need a licence if you are also working as a security consultant.
- You are a licensed tow truck driver
- You carry out work covered by another Act
