Monitoring & Communications
Although monitoring operators are largely unseen by the general public, they play a critical role delivering security services within an office-based central monitoring centre.
Their role involves accurately and effectively monitoring and actioning events or alerts received from electronic security systems, including answering incoming calls, making outbound calls, and liaising with operational staff, other security companies, customers and emergency services.
Roles are suitable for people of all ages and genders with excellent customer service and communication skills (verbal and written). You’ll also need good computer and data entry skills and enjoy working within a team environment. Transferrable customer service skills from industries such as retail, hospitality and tourism would be very helpful.
Effective monitoring operators are:
- Excellent communicators
- Observant – to see signs of a possible security breach
- Keen on working with technology
If you’re keen to progress your career within the security industry, or other associated industries such as call centres, monitoring operator roles provide an ideal career pathway with a range of industry specific NZQA qualifications you can complete. Once you’ve gained experience, you’ll then be able progress into more advanced positions.
